Countdown to Worldcon 2018 in San Jose for the NASFiC vote:
Welcome fans and friends to the Utah for 2019 bid.
There is still more bidding?? Of course! We have a whole year of bringing you information for NASFiC in 2019.
We won the right to host Westercon 72 in Layton, UT, and wish to combine it with NASFiC into a fannish extravaganza for everyone. Hop on board the bid train and ride with us to victory!
They are bidding for another convention. What sanity?
NASFiC, or the North American Science Fiction Convention, is held anywhere on the North American continent when the current Worldcon is scheduled overseas. The only bid for Worldcon 77 is Dublin, Ireland. Once Dublin is voted in, it's off the rails fun.
Our goals in bidding for NASFiC to combine with Westercon 72, the West Coast Regional Science Fantasy Convention, are:
- To encourage participation in voting
- To join great fan communities across the North American Continent
- Invite the world to Utah
- And offer a little of all the genres these two great conventions cover.
We invite you to presupport and join in our Layton, Utah, party July 4th - 7th, 2019. Pick your poison, find your interests and enjoy all fandom has to offer.
But, but why?..
Westercon fans are supportive, energetic, responsive, compassionate and entertaining. It was clear to us that Westercon is an experience we want again for everyone. It also became clear that our vision expanded past one convention. We wanted a celebration bigger than before. Utah has looked at hosting a NASFiC but never saw the right opportunity until now.
Five years is long enough to wait for a regional and national fan convention in Utah! So let's combine more to make up for lost time. We... Can’t... Wait... Jump on board and help. Please support our bid to have NASFiC 2019 in Layton, Utah, combined with Westercon 72.
Vote for us to win the right to host NASFiC 2019 in conjunction with Westercon 72, at Worldcon 76 in San Jose, California, August 16th - 20th, 2018.
The bid committee will be reaching out to explain our ‘mad scientist’ machinations, promoting and publicizing the movement at other events until the vote in 2018.
This is a full volunteer bid to serve a community we have grown to love. We’re asking for your support and participation to show what these honored conventions are all about.
What is a Worldcon or NASFiC exactly? How are they related?
The World Science Fiction Convention is an annual convention held since 1939 (skipping 1942-1945), which gathers fans (and pros) from around the world. Worldcon is also where members vote for the Hugo awards. The 75th Worldcon is in Helsinki, Finland in 2017.
Whenever Worldcon is held at an overseas location, a NASFiC, North America Science Fiction Convention, is usually held as well. The NASFiC serves as a kind of substitute for fans who can't make it to Worldcon. The major difference is that the location of the NASFiC is determined by members of a Worldcon. 2017’s NASFiC is in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Mad Scientist? What do you mean by that?
The Utah for 2019 bid team won the vote and the right to host Westercon 72 in Layton, Utah July 4th - 7th, 2019. Our 'mad scientists' decided to try an experiment and bid for both voted conventions to hold a combined NASFiC & Westercon in Utah. Some conventions have been combined before, but not like this. We are inviting the whole North American Continent to party in Utah and we hope the rest of the world comes along for the fun.
What is this 'Westercon 72' the Utah team won the rights to host?
Westercon is the West Coast’s most prestigious science fiction and fantasy convention. It bounces around the Western Region of the United States, and celebrated its 70th year in 2017. Started many years ago for fans who couldn’t afford to attend the World Science Fiction Convention, Westercon became an event where fans travel to different parts of the West, join with different communities, and experience science fiction and fantasy fandom together.
This convention has been held from Vancouver to El Paso, Hawaii, to Tempe, Arizona for Westercon 70 in 2017, and Denver, Colorado for Westercon 71 in 2018. Westercon is a science fiction & fantasy convention that covers general interest in speculative fiction genres, art, science, costuming, gaming, music, television, movies, and other topics that interest fandom. Westercon is a registered service mark of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, Inc. and is used with permission. Please visit www.westercon.org for further details, bylaws, history, etc..
What does that mean for Utah?
Should the August 2017 Worldcon vote an overseas event for 2019, it opens up the door for a 2019 NASFiC. The Utah Bid Team is starting early and bidding for NASFiC to trying and bring both NASFiC 2019 and Westercon 72 together for a huge celebration.
So ‘check under the hood’, explore the possibilities and help us make Utah for 2019 an event for everyone.
